11 FLYING WING, 75 SQUADRON
DHAHRAN - KING ABDULLAH AZIZ AB
PA-200 IDS TORNADO
The sqn was formed in 1997and is permanently based at KAAB. It was formed to operate the Tornado IDS in classic interdiction roles, utilising UK and US conventional weapons, medium and low level laser designation munitions and suppression of enemy air defences by the use of ALARM. Initially, 8 crews were taken from other existing units to form the sqn, and many of the crews had seen action during Gulf War 1. In 1998, the sqn moved into purpose built accommodation. Annually, the sqn flies over 3000 missions, for which in 1995 it received a prestigious reward for exemplary safety and achievement from HRH Deputy Minister of Defence, Aviation and General Investigation. The missions flown by the sqn are combat-ready work up missions, continuation training and various post-graduate courses. 75th sqn practices evasion and composite force tactics on a regular basis with the RSAF fighter squadrons and with other Gulf nations. From 2006, the RSAF Tornado IDS underwent a major upgrade to both avionics and displays, with 75th sqn assigned as the lead sqn for its introduction. With full fleet modification completed, all aircraft are able to carry a range of smart weapons, enhancing their combat capability.
