Clarence Dixon Cadillac, Hollywood CA, 1958

    Newer Older

1440 No. Vine Street. Is that an Eldorado Brougham in the front of the showroom? The building now houses a FedEx/Kinko's and looks virtually unchanged otherwise.

Alden, I believe you're right. Barely visible, but it seems to have the Brougham's distinctive roof.

I see it in there too. For as rare as they are, they should've brought it outside for this picture.

This 60 is parked on the side where the 58 is in the postcard.

Does anyone know what year Dixon Cadillac closed down?? I worked there a long time ago, and was trying to figure out what year that was!

Thanks to considerable help from the Central Library Business & Economics Dept. of the Los Angeles Public Library (great info source), I've found that Clarence Dixon Cadillac was at the 1440 Vine St. location until 1974 or 1975, when they moved to their newly-built facility at 5678 Sunset Blvd, where they remained in business until 1990. It appears that the name "Dixon Cadillac" continued on until 1995 at a No. Beverly Drive address, but since that is a residential area I suspect that the business license may have been maintained, but that there was no longer a Cadillac dealership operating under that name. If anyone can provide additional information or corrections to any of this please do so.

Interesting to see this picture. I worked at Dixon Cadillac for 14 years, from 1957 to 1971. I started there at 18 years of age. I don't know who the woman is in the picture outside beside the car....she didn't work there. I think you're right about the time frame of their move to Vine St. It was about three years after I left them. Jack Goodman bought the company from Clarence Dixon in approximately 1962.

I worked in Hollywood from the early 70's until around 1990.
I had no idea the building on Vine was ever Dixon Cadillac, I remember that building, or the one right next to it as Music Plus record store.
I do remember the people I worked for buying 2 1976 Sevilles from a salesman named "Pat" who at the time was pretty elderly at the newer location at Sunset and Wilton.
I also heard rumors one time that Dixon Cadillac may have been at one time located on Hollywood boulevard, near the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.
