Over the Front: aircraft and airmen from the First World War
Australians played a part in aviation’s remarkable advancement during the First World War. In the clear skies over the Western Front in France and in the Middle East, young men fought in flimsy machines of wood, linen, and wire. The photographs show some of these extraordinary men and the aircraft they used during the Great War.

The three colour images were taken by Frank Hurley, an official photographer for the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) during the First World War. The Memorial holds an extensive collection of photographs from Hurley, and those of many other official photographers, in its collection.
