Bee or Hoverfly- Orton effect

    Newer Older

I have seen this little bug in my garden and have not been able to take his picture until today only managed to get in 2 photos before he took off. I dont know whether he is a bee or a large hoverfly. Experimented with orton to see how it works on bug macros

Yep, Bugmaker is right. The abdomen and eyes also say "hoverfly" to me. Good job getting in so close - they can be easily spooked little creatures.

It's not a hoverfly, it's a "Native Drone fly". Eristalinus punctulatus or similar. Hoverflies generally have wings that don't make it past the abdomen, and have a "false margin", which is where the veins in the wings do not make it to the trailing edge. You will notice they do in this one.
