UNSUBSCRIBER ( 2) ( self-portrait)
acrylic and tempera on canvas
The title of this painting, THE UNSUBSCRIBER (2) names the second version of a self-portrait using a title invented for a work of art by the poet Bill Knott-- an American poet whose work I like.
The complete texts of all of Bill Knott's books of poems are here:
The first self-portrait for which I borrowed Bill Knott's title is here:
Though I find many poems in his other books to admire, my favorite overall collection is COLLECTED POLITICAL POEMS, from 1965-2010. Knott is defiant, anarchic and enormously clever and inventive with language. I heard him read once long ago, and he was a favorite of Robert Bly, an old acquaintance of mine whom I tried to help stop smoking.
Thanks, Bill and Robert.
