Fiji: Far Beyond the Classroom
Auburn University student Shelby Sires, right, a global studies major, cooks with her host mom, Losavati Ceacea, known as “Mama Lo,” in Nakawanga village, Fiji. Students were taken in as family and were usually told to call their host family by their familial names. The students were included in everyday life in the village: cooking, cleaning, weaving mats and fishing. And as is the way in Fiji, plenty of time to slow down, drink tea and just be.
