Porter Heatherly

Auburn scientists developed a gene therapy treatment for GM1 gangliosidosis that is in clinical trials at the National Institutes of Health. Sara and Michael Heatherly of Opelika, Alabama, whose son Porter was the first known case of GM1 in Alabama and died in 2016, have been instrumental in bringing awareness to the disease. Pictured in a 2014 photo are, front from left, Sara Heatherly, Porter Heatherly, Dr. Doug Martin; second row from left, Michael Heatherly and Dr. Henry Baker, director emeritus of Auburn’s Scott-Ritchey Research Center.
