Artistic Portrait by G. W. Gurley, Utica, NY
This is a photograph that I had to have, thus I purchased it (came in an album) recently at an antique show. Everything about it is great with the exception of the condition. A very unusual and intimate pose. Possibly a mother and daughter or perhaps two sisters. The expression on the young girl's face is both mysterious and dainty at the same time. Note they are holding hands. A gift inscription in the CDV album which contained the photo dates it to 1871 from the Wilcox, PA, area. From the studio of G. W. Gurley, located at "128, 130, & 132 Genesee Street, Next to the Bridge, Utica NY". I love the old addresses on the back of photos that refer to a landmark ("near the bridge"), truly indicative of simpler times. The album was purchased in Ohio.
