A couple of guidelines for those who want to use this photo: This is my most viewed and copied photo that I have on flickr. I have no problem with that and encourage people to use the image (or any of my photography) in a personal blog or web page and only ask that you link back to the flickr photo page or to my web page at astroturtle.com.
What ticks me off though is when I find web pages using this photo to sell trips to Jamaica or boat tours of the Luminous Lagoon, especially since I have NEVER been asked or given permission for this image to be used in this manner. So I need to make this clear -- this or any other photo on my flickr account is NOT AVAILABLE FOR COMMERCIAL USE. If you are using my photography to advertize something, you are doing so without my permission and I will pursue the matter legally to have the photo removed.
I took this shot on the "Glistening Waters" tour of the Luminous Lagoon in Falmouth, Jamaica. (near Montego)
The lagoon, which is a mix of warm Caribbean seawater and cool fresh water from the Martha Brae River, is the perfect environment for one of the brightest bio-luminescent microorganisms around called pryodinium bahamene.
The microorganisms are harmless and will glow brightly when disturbed. You can see bright flashes underwater as fish swim out of the way.
The coolest thing is that you get to swim in this stuff! I couldn't resist and had to go for a dip which was indescribable. Just imagine your entire body surrounded by the glow in the photo. Easily one of the most memorable swims of my life. BTW, the bottom of the lagoon is... um... "fluffy" and gross. I'd take something for my feet next time.
PP: Noise reduction, smoothing and exposure adjustments.
