Sunset at Ahu Vai Uri

In a recent trip to Rapa Nui (Easter Island), I got to witness this fantastic sunset behind Ahu Vai Uri. Five moai stand majestically on a low cliff over the Pacific Ocean, while a thin crescent Moon watches silently from above.

Ahu are ceremonial stone platforms on top of which moai stand. There are ahu all over the island, mostly along the coast. The moai themselves were carved out of the slopes of Rano Raraku, a volcanic crater, and then transported to different ahu. This is a rather impressive feat, as moai weigh about 14 tons on average!
