Moonset | by Juan-Carlos Munoz-Mateos

Is there anything better than a sunset? If you ask me, a moonset can be as beautiful, if not more, than a sunset. You may not be bathed by an intense golden light, but watching the atmosphere slowly refract and distort the features on the surface of the Moon is mesmerizing. Here’s a sequence of shots I took a few days ago from Paranal Observatory, as the Moon set over the Pacific Ocean. You can see how the refraction squeezes the Moon vertically, creating magical ever-changing layered patterns. Canon 6D + Tamron 100-400 at 400 mm, f/6.3, 1/50 sec, ISO 1600-3200.
