The Nest, Nairobi
Irene Baumgartner, a beaming, gold-hearted lady from Bavaria, opened The Nest, an orphanage devoted to the rescue, rehabilitation and re-integration of abandoned children and of the children of imprisoned mothers, twenty years ago.
Her spotlessly clean orphanage, located in a residential area in Nairobi, is staffed by volunteer workers from Kenya and abroad and relies entirely on private donations for its funding.
Food prices have been rising astronomically in recent months, as a result of the famine hitting the Horn of Africa. Irene is also constantly battling against unexpected barriers to her work arising out of corruption and speculation.
