I want something good to die for to make it beautiful to live

"Go With the Flow" by Queens of the Stone Age

First off, Happy 4th of July to everyone viewing from the US!

This has to be my favorite holiday because its summer, everyone is happy and BBQing and of course… FIREWORKS!

Anyway, I still cannot believe this project is over. Over a year ago I was so excited to start and the day after I got my D5000, I started this project. I really didn’t think much into it, I just wanted to start a project 365. I thought it would be fun to start with my new camera and because I found so many great projects. I was really glad I decided to start this project when I did so since it would document my first year away from home at the School of Visual Arts. It not only documented my struggles with art school but also in my opinion, improved my skills as an artist.

Committing to taking 1 picture a day for an entire year really developed my photography skills. I didn’t always take the most amazing pictures because, to sum it up, life came in the way. Whether it was class or work or I was just out with friends. Regardless, I always had this project on my mind. From the moment I woke up, I would think of what I would do for my 365 today and even after that I would plan out the next day’s picture in my head. It wasn’t just a little project I was doing on Flickr, but it was a goal. I wasn’t going to give up on this project ever and the idea never even crossed my mind the last year. I did at times, dread taking a picture but at other times, I was so proud of what I was producing.

Some of the pictures I want to point as [somewhat] important during the year:

Meeting my roommate Daisy

My Green Day in New Jersey/MGMT in Montreal trip. This also was my first time leaving the United States

My first explore

First day in my dorm

First (of many) visits from Zalex

Zombie March

That one time my camera fell off my bed

My most viewed/most interesting picture

The American Idiot musical creeping

Shippin’ up to Boston to visit Melissa

My 19th Birthday

Escaping the city for the weekend

Last night in Manhattan

3 years with David

This year was a hard one for me, I slipped into a bit of a depression spring semester and just really wanted to give up. I still, even though I was feeling like shit, never gave up on this project. This project gave me hope and the support artistically I received from this site has been amazing. I found a community to go to when I wasn’t feeling welcome in school and found inspiration when I thought I had lost all hope.

I want to also take a moment to thank--

David, who helped me with half my pictures. Whether it was being my focus model, letting me upload and edit pictures on his laptop or just coming out with me to go take pictures. You were the biggest help during this project and I don’t know what I would have done without you.

Zalex for visiting me/letting me come up visiting you over the school year. I don’t know what I would have done without you, your company really saved me over the year and I cannot thank you enough.

Melissa because I love you.

And thanks to Dave and James for helping me with the smoke bombs, the balloons, etc. And to Dave’s sister’s boyfriend’s friends who got me the smoke bombs in Pennsylvania because they are illegal in New York.

Lastly, thank you all for viewing my pictures. I love you all.

xoxo Ashley
