My father was a tile layer for a number of years--of "V.A.T." as he called it. There was also a product called "Pour A Floor". You put down a base tile, then applied a sticky substance, then threw bits of colored flecks onto the surface (so you could customize your tile), then sealed it. As I recall the sealer wasn't very good, wore easily, peeled off easily, leaving you with all those "bits" to sweep or vacuum up. "Pour A Floor" didn't last long as a result.

It's concerning that many folks nowadays underestimate the potential for asbestos floor tile to release microscopic fibers into the air under certain conditions, such as: breakage during dry removal, repeated abrasion of chair legs or casters, heavy foot-traffic, etc.

Have seen some VAT with asbestos content as high as 20%+, with visible fibers protruding from the tile material. Hopefully your father didn't bring home dust from his work-sites.
