Gateway of India

Photographed is the Gateway of India, Mumbai. I went here last night with Kavitha and Gayatri. Since most of the crowd was leaving when we reached there, I tried various angles of photographing the gate. I actually had good fun till I wanted to walk across the sides of the gate so I can photograph the Gateway of India with the reflections from the water. When we reached there and the moment I setup the tripod, couple of cops came. They said I was not supposed to take pictures there using a tripod (handheld is ok though!). And the problem was the cops kept speaking in hindi, a language I'm not very proficient yet! Thank God kavitha and Gayatri were there, they sort of talked to the cops to get me out of the trouble. Cops were persistent on taking us to the police station, but after about 20 mins of conversing, they let us go.

I completely understand the reasons cops give utmost security to the area (especially because of the recent bombings at Taj hotel, which was right behind us from where I setup the tripod). But there is a way to handle it. Also, they should be able to differentiate if one is photographing for hobby or for some malicious purpose. One thing is for sure - this incident will prevent me from taking the tripod out of my bag in the city for some time!!!
