stranger #99: Ceferina (and her sweet sweet baby!)
Ceferina made a huge impact on me.
She was selling some of her handmade goods at one of our stops to view the Sacred Valley outside of Pisac. Every time our tour bus stopped, these women approached, hoping to make a sale. "hey lady...." But there was something different about Ceferina. She was much more shy than the other women, and I appreciated her not begging me for the sale. I somehow convinced her (not being able to speak the same language) that I would buy one of her ribbons on the way out. We did the tour, and headed back to the bus. In the swarm of saleswomen, I spotted her way in the back. And she spotted me. We both smiled and met back up. I ended up buying a beautiful ribbon type trim thing for my hat, and asked her to take her picture. She was so pleasant and willing to pose. Then came the time to get her name. I tried to understand the letters she was speaking---which I believe was a mixture of Spanish and a native language, and could not for the life of me get them right! I was trying over and over again to type them into my phone, and each time, she shook her head "no". Finally, she took a stick and carved in the dirt "C e f e r i n a". I typed them into my fancy iPhone, showed her one last time and she smiled w/ approval. There was something special in those minutes. I'll never forget her.
