fiber weaving...

aka using more junk to make art.

i have a ton of sheets and fabric in my room and we've been shredding them up and weaving them into thin cardboard, then adding oil pastel and tempera for embellishments. i'm always shocked at how many kids struggle w/ the "over under" concept, and shocked again at the kids who DON'T struggle, yet i expect to. :)

Exactly. Adults too. These colorful shots always seem to brighten my day.

If I wasn't a full time quilter, I would want to be an art teacher!
You have an amazing talent. Thanks for being the guiding light to the young artists to express themselves so creatively and fearlessly!
I want to come and be in your class!

What a cool project! These remind me of the pot holders I used to weave as a kid. Why don't I do that anymore? It was fun! :)

So true! I am often amazed at the kids who I think will struggle, but catch on right away!! And then vice versa.... :)

did you slit the cardboard for them?
I'd like to do weaving with my kids.
  • Tina 4y

nope. they did it. i have to walk them through it though. fold the cardboard. draw lines. let me check the lines. cut from the fold. leave 2-3 finger spaces on the edges....most of them handled it well. i only had to have a few re-do....

we do this with plastic grocery bags cut into strips, Mylar ballons, plastic table cloths, and anything else flexable enough to weave. It is a big hit.
