Can We Dump It Into Space?

Mixed media from recycled materials

This piece is from my show 'Disposition' in which I explore our part, as humans, in affecting the planet, nature and the environment. It is made of mostly recycled materials - plastic containers, discarded clothes and fabric, acrylic paint and house paint, tape, fishing line, and varnish.

A detailed view from different angles, as well as more information about the installation, can be seen in a video I uploaded earlier:

Reminiscent of a human heart, the inspiration initially was the 'red planet' - Mars, which in the language of mythology and symbology represents strength, masculinity, and also anger and war. It connects to the idea that is raised, of launching the garbage we create on the planet into space. However the 'red ball' became more and more heart-like in shape and color, symbolizing our connection to our environment, and how we are part of a whole, our world is a part of us as we are a part of it, we cannot rid ourselves of our environment that we created (including our garbage) just as we cannot rid ourselves of our own hearts.
