Sannenzaka Path, Higashiyama, Kyoto

Coming down the Sannen-zaka steps, with a school excursion for company!

Some of the most spectacular and most interesting temples in Kyoto are found in the area near the base of the Higashiyama mountain range – Kiyamizu-dera, Kodai-ji, Kennin-ji and Sanyusangen-do to name just the most famous. With these attractions, the area is always busy with sight-seers and school excursion groups. The narrow streets up to the temple area are lined with picturesque antique, souvenir and tea shops. The Ninnen-zaka and Sannen-zaka paths are lined with machinami - traditional shop fronts – and you are likely to see young women dressed as maiko, or trainee geishas. For the most part they will be maiko for the day having paid for the elaborate hairstyle and renting the fabulous kimono. Young couples will also rent kimono while they enjoy the wonderful Kyoto cultural experience. The area includes the famous Gion entertainment area – theatres, machinami and more maiko.
