Great White from above (Carcharodon carcharias)

    Newer Older

Photo not mine, but I found it too good not to save, show and tell. It can be hard to imagine the size of a female white shark and some comparison can come in handy…
A female – the larger of the white sharks sex – can reach a length of 21 feet (6.1 metres), but the average size is around 16 feet or 4 metres. The longest ever recorded great white sharks measured are all disputed around 23 feet or 7 metres. This seems to be quite a large adult shark factoring in the distortion of water and a wide-angle lens, that both make subjects appear larger underwater.
    * I can't find who took this photo or where, but most likely East or South Africa.

The white sharks in the Mediterranean are almost instinct. I lived in Malta for 2 years and during that time there was one white shark that appeared in the waters there. What was the reaction of the coastguard?

They went hunting it with everything they got! Hunting it from motorboats with machine-guns...and in the end it got killed.

Around 1980 the biggest white shark, according to the Guinness book of records, was captured in Malta.
