Mary Alice: Hunts Point, Bronx

'I got into hookin late, when I was thirty one. Developed a bad dope problem, lost my job, needed money. I once had a pimp, but no more. Pimp stands for "Put in my pocket," they just rip you off.'

I asked her how she wanted to be described 'I am an African american women, half Jamaican, mother of two wonderful children. I fell on hard times, but do what I got to do.'

Beautiful portrait. Hard story. Did she tell you anything about her children?

great focus, and texture vs. blur. i always wonder how did they get out alive--what was the first positive step. how do they keep it all together. pretty tough cookie!

agree with amnessia. just amazing what you draw out of people, that you go back to them with a print, that you manage to capture good things in so many people. as for Mary Alice I can't even imagine her life.

    Thanks everyone.

Mary Alice walked up to me and asked me to have her picture taken. She had declined a few weeks before at the "Junkyard", but said she was 'so high I wasn't sure what you wanted.'

She did mention her children, from what she told me, both are doing well.

Thanks again for showing the other side of New York, when we visit it we only see the rich side like Rockefeller center, Times square and all the other tourist places. You're shots show me that there still a lot of poverty too. I hope all these wonderful people have a great Christmas!

Chris Arnade Chris, this is my Aunt mary, thank you! Thank you! Thank you! We found her, after 14 long years, here she is! You have helped give her teh strength and exposed her struggle, allowing others to encourage and aspire her. I can't thank you enough for giving her a voice.

Chris Arnade Thank you for giving my Aunt mary a voice, after 13 long years, we have searched for her and here she is. I can't thank you enough for exposing her struggle and allowing others to encourage and aspire her. We are on the road to recovery and Hunts Point no longer has a hold on Mary Alice :)
