The School Lunch
Hello I'm Stefanie Lash, Senior Advisor Planning and Development. I stumbled upon this delightful slice of social history, "The School Lunch", recently whilst looking for something else in a box of miscellaneous papers on a tip-off from another archivist. This wee undated booklet, published by the Health Department, describes nutritional guidelines for children's school lunches. It also has sample lunches, handy tips (how to prevent children chucking their lunch in the bin) and recipes that raise the humble sandwich filling to a fine art.
You would expect this to be in the Health Department records, but this booklet actually comes from the assorted records of the National Film Unit archivist (series 6025). The majority of the relevant box contains papers to do with National Film Unit productions including films on Samoa's independence, early diagnosis of cerebral palsy, and an ad for Canterbury University. There's no film listed about school lunches, so whether it was included in another film is yet to be seen.
Why don't we all surprise our loved ones this week by sending them off to work or school with home-made fare taken from The School Lunch? Imagine how pleased they will be when they bite into their "sandwiches of cold peas." Seriously though, most of these lunches sound pretty palatable.
