TODAY'S TRAFFIC RULES
Created in response to the growing number of cars in our roads, this video was aired on the 19 October 1977 to warn motorists that the give-way rules were changing.
This comedic PSA put out by the Transport Department shows a man in 1950s fashion driving on a city road in 1977 and the trouble he could get into if the give-way rules weren’t changed. The new rules were published in the newspapers the day after.
The give-way rules in this legislation were amended again in 2010 as they were found to be confusing. Transport Minister Steven Joyce, "Our current give way rules for turning vehicles are confusing and out of step with the rest of the world. Research shows changing the rules could reduce relevant intersection crashes by 7 per cent."
