Victoria Avenue, Wanganui
This undated image is taken from a lantern slide held at Archives New Zealand, probably from the National Publicity Studios image collection.
Lantern slides became popular as a medium for displaying photographic images in the mid-nineteenth century. A transparent slide was placed into a projector which illuminated the image and projected it onto a surface. This changed the experience of viewing photographs from an individual to a collective one, as it enabled large audiences of people to view the image at the same time.
Lantern slides remained popular until the mid-twentieth century when they were rendered obsolete by new photographic technology.
