Rifleman in flight. This is the first photographic record of the win[g] action of this, New Zealand's smallest bird, its total length being only three inches. For its nesting site, a hole or crevice in a tree is usually chosen. It is a highly beneficial Native bird, found throughout New Zealand, its food consisting entirely of insect life.
