Entrance to Auschwitz I, the original camp, was first constructed to hold Polish political prisoners, who began to arrive in May 1940. Extermination of prisoners started in September 1941, and Auschwitz II–Birkenau went on to become a major site of Nazi extermination of the Jews. From 1942 - 1944, trains delivered Jews to the camp's gas chambers from all over German-occupied Europe.
Building straight ahead and to the left when entering the camp was block 24, it was formerly used as a brothel. It was also here that the corpses of prisoners, who had attempted to escape, were often displayed as a warning to the other prisoners.
