In this miniature city called the Dhobi-Ghat, dhobi denizens (laundrymen ) scurry between rows of concrete wash pens where clothes soak in soapy water. The dirt is then beat out on flogging stones before the garments are tossed into huge vats of boiling starch.
When dry, the dhobis use charcoal irons, then pile the neatly pressed items into bundles. Somehow, the clothes are separated and delivered to the customer's door that same evening, all for a pittance. Mumbai, India
