Pompeii | by a rancid amoeba

My mother is demonstrating how Pompeiians crossed the street. The streets were often quite wet (they let the water fountains overflow so as to wash the streets clean) so at every block there were stones like this so that people could cross the road without getting their shoes or feet wet.

The stones were spaced so that carts being pulled down the road could roll between them. This was a two-way street, but some were one-way and then there'd only be one stone in the middle for crossing.
