DIY RF shield for flash

    Newer Older

As most of you are now aware, the new Pocketwizard Flex tt5 has comms problems due to the RF noise coming from the Canon 580ex and MK II flashes. To solve the problem, PW started to give away (Free of charge) the new AC5 Soft Shield, however this is only valid for US residentes only. Well, since I dont live in the USA, I started to do my homework and realised that copper actually blocks a big porcentage of the RF noise coming from the flash. So I headed to the local Art Shop (Riot art shop located at Westfieds in Burwood) and got a copper/aluminum sheet for $30 dollars. cut a few pieces and taped it to the flash and BINGO! problem solved. Without this DIY soft shield, I was lucky to get 15 meters distance from the flash, with the soft shield, I stopped testing at around 150mts away (I guess that is plenty of distance for what I want)
This is not a pretty solution, but at least makes me happy, Im now planning to make a sock for it. (will post photos once done) You can see the test Here

Have you tried aluminum foil? That would be a lot cheaper than copper.

I didnt actually try it, but according to some books, aluminum foil does very little to stop the RF noise, copper was the prefered material used. I should have done it... this sheet cost me $30 dollars!!!

Hmmm, thats interesting to say the least! Glad it works. I just received my AC5 in the mail last week and so far so good. I figured PW would give all their customers (US or not) equal fixes, but considering they haven't even made their shields available to BUY, nevermind the October "release date"... it's just bad business IMO.

[] Hey, are you using it with canon flashes? if so, which one? I read that the 420ex is not affected by this problem. Only the 580ex and 580ex II.

I also have a cheap Cactus KF36 and dont have any issues, and Im glad to say that it also does HSS, I have tested it up to the Max Shutter speed in my canon 5d MK II

You can see the testing here

I forgot to add that I tested it again yesterday as far as 250m, didnt want to keep walking as that was way more than enough range for me.

I've been using it with a 580ex II, I haven't tried it with any other flash other than my Vivi 285HV... Before I got the free "sock" from PW I had about a 0% success rate, but today I finally got a chance to try it out with the new shield - other than my accidental pressing buttons on the back of the flash (switching it to manual instead of ETTL) it worked as advertised. No mis-fires or full dumps. I wish I could see the LCD on the flash through the RF fabric though. Here's a link to the shoot I did today.

i still have to write to pocket wizard and get my shield for my 580exII

did you get your shields for your 580exII's?

    12. aquaphotoboy 109 months ago | reply

I think you might be too late now to get it for free, as it was until the 30 of Jan.

Yes, I have a friend in the USA and I put her address when I claimed for mine (keep in mind I live in Australia and using the CE versions)

PW sent the 3 socks for my tt5's. My friend already received them and post them to me to Australia, but I have receive them yet. I cant wait to get it

How are they going now? Has your 580 fried yet?

    16. aquaphotoboy 93 months ago | reply

CreativeDirections mmm no, why? I had it for about 2 years now and working fine. However I no longer use my diy fix as I have the sock from PW now.
