art school punk Baltimore 1978

I have no idea how i managed to get a BFA - my main priority was driving heroic distances to see punk shows in DC and NYC...

I love this picture. It looks like a cover of an old 7-inch.

my youth was so fucking boring
but not in any of the ways you might think
still when I look at this I realize what a wasted youth I had

strange, baltimore, and I wrote john waters about the previous pic before I even got to this one.

For the world, it's been all downhill since then (at least artistically). You must have seen some great music -- early Half Japanese, Nurses, Slickee Boys (before they got slick), and out of towners like Pere Ubu, Television, Talking Heads (when they were good). Much better education than sitting in a classroom with a brush or camera.

I loved 1/2 Japs! and I literally saw EVERY band that came through DC back then cuz I worked in the coatroom at the (original) 930 Club and I could see everything for free! the new 930 has no SOUL.

I've only been to the new 9:30 once and I agree (even though the show, Gogol Bordello was stunningly good).

I met Mark Jickling, who played guitar on most of the Half Japanese albums once they expanded beyond Jad and David, a few years back and I think he was bemused at how star struck I was.

Jickling was then a researcher at the Library of Congress (and I just googled him and see that he and Rebby Sharp -- of the great lost Richmond band, the Orthotonics -- have made a series of recordings of Archaic Greek poems that Jickling translated and set to music -- www.writing.upenn.edu/pennsound/x/Old-Songs.html -- the world does move on).

Ooooh, I'm a fan of both Half Jap & Orthotonics as well!
Speaking of lost Richmond bands: Ululating Mummies!
