If you live inland and work, say, in an office, chances are you will have no idea when high and low sea tides will occur. Being part of the fishing industry in Cornwall tide times are part of your working life, and in some cases essential to plan your day. Many of the fishing harbours in Cornwall are tidal, effectively only accessible to enter or leave for a few hours each day. Hayle Harbour has another layer of complexity; the sand bar at the mouth of the river estuary, which must be carefully navigated and at just the right time. On the afternoon this picture was taken there were four fishing boats just out at sea, patiently waiting for just the right moment to make the final journey into harbour on the rising tide. All in a day’s work.
