Watch for the Sunset

Yesterday was the official start of the Holy month of Ramadan in many places in the Arabian Gulf. Because the Islamic calender is a lunar one, Ramadan is signalled when the crescent moon is sighted, which is why it may be slightly different in different parts of the world.

The Month of Ramadan is the month of fasting for Muslims, where food and drink are prohibited from sunrise until sunset. However, Ramadan is about more than just abstaining from food and drink. It is the month in which the Qur'an (Holy Book) was revealed, and so reading it and contemplating its meaning is encouraged in this month. It is a month in which everyone is encouraged to connect to God as the gates of Paradise are open. Ramadan is also a time for purification, as ones fast is not seen to be accepted if one commits sinful acts, such as backbiting and gossiping. Essentially, Ramadan is about restraining oneself. Most of all, Ramadan is about knowing how those less fortunate than us feel everyday.

I was once asked if fasting Ramadan is hard. I can honestly say that it is not; Muslims all over wait for this month, as it is a month of forgiveness. I can think of no other time when, people are so ready to give, forgive and spend time with their families.

And may you all have a Blessed Ramadan!
