House of the Seven Gables (2)

The House of the Seven Gables on Turner Street in Salem. Now a museum, it was once the home of Susannah Ingersoll, Nathaniel Hawthorne's cousin, who told him of the house's history -- all but three of its gables had been removed by the time he knew it. His novel The House of the Seven Gables made it famous. When the house was restored about a century ago, certain fictional elements were incorporated because visitors wanted the real house to "accurately" resemble the one imagined by Hawthorne in his book.
