Hilltop Stadium (R.I.P.)

When DU dropped football in January 1961, all the local columnists asked the same question: "What's going to happen to Hilltop Stadium and its 32,000 seats?" (It was also called DU Stadium, and was torn down in 1971.)

I sat through a couple of games here in 1960, in what turned out to be DU's last season. They lost them both. Over the team's final three seasons, they lost all but seven games, so interest waned and crowds were paltry. In fact, my only real memory of the place comes from a JV game between DU and Wyoming. I went because my roommate (who was from Wyoming) knew somebody on the Wyoming squad and wanted to talk to him. He asked me to tag along. Up in the stands, I looked at the rosters of both teams and discovered -- much to my surprise -- that I, too, knew somebody on the Wyoming squad! We'd been on the track team together at our Massachusetts high school. Near the end of the game (which Wyoming won, of course, and lopsidedly), we both went over to the Wyoming bench and talked to the guys we knew.
