Scarlet-banded Barbet

Capito wallacei

Flor de Café (Plataforma), San Martín region, Peru.

Male. One of the most spectacular Neotropical birds described this century (A Striking New Species of Barbet (Capitoninae: Capito) from the Eastern Andes of Peru. O'Neill, John P.; Lane, Daniel F.; Kratter, Andrew W.; Capparella, Angelo P.; Joo, Cecilia Fox (2000). www.museum.lsu.edu/lane/O'Neill et al. Capito.pdf). For many years it was almost impossible for all but the most adventurous to see, because it was only known from a remote mountain range. However, in 2011 it was found at a new site that was accessible by road (albeit a very bad one) and since then it has been seen regularly there.
