Quebracho Crested-Tinamou

Eudromia formosa formosa

Taco Pozo, Chaco province, Argentina.

A roosting bird we found next to a dirt road near town in early evening. It was photographed in the spotlight (not flashed), which washed out the colors. This species is restricted to the Chaco region from northern Argentina to western Paraguay. The name "Quebracho" refers to several species of trees with very hard wood, such as Aspidosperma quebracho-blanco, Schinopsis lorentzii, and Schinopsis balansae.
