Something a little different from me. I was messing about on the beach last night with Bristol Bound and I tried a few shots I normally wouldn't. I know this technique has been done countless times but I really liked this result. Just printed one on canvas and it looks great!

Love to know what you all think? :-)

i would like to try something similar myself.. did you use any kind of neutral density filter/special equipment? or was it just a very long exposure in the dark?
      thanks! :)

@TJHubbard: The only filter used was a 2 stop grad on the sky to ensure I retained that deep blue. It was completely dark so no other filters were required. Hope this helps.

how come you deleted the pic with the red and green lights? i loved that shot!

    4. antonyspencer 71 months ago | reply

I didn't like it as much as this one and wasn't overly happy with the light trails across the water. sorry mate:-)

well i loved it! these two have inspired me and next time I'm at the coast (July I'm heading to Honduras!) I'll be sure to give it a go myself.

you said that this has been done countless times? I'd be grateful if you could point me in the direction of some other examples?

Your photostream is probably my favourite one on Flickr, and this is my new favourite image from it! Something about it's really caught my imagination. I don't usually go for abstracts like this, but this one's beautiful.

The water bowl for Rosalio, my longtime feline companion, happens to be exactly the color(s) of this picture. The slow, methodical way he approaches the bowl has always intrigued me. He studies the blue vessel six inches away, then steps up to the lip to sniff the surroundings, lowers his head to examine the water, pauses a moment, then takes a taste, and finally licks a path across the surface in a meticulous ritual of rejuvenation. Watching Rosalio do this minutes ago made me think of you immediately ~~ standing on the beach near midnight, surveying the scene, sniffing the air, finding a spot to anchor the tripod, mounting the camera, setting the timer, then waiting for sensors to lick the blues out of the night for 800 seconds.

Minimalism implies stripping down to fundamental features, extreme simplification of form. But there's a distinct sense here of distillation. Vibrant hues have been extracted from the darkness, raw features have been refined, the sleepless sky and sea and glow have all been condensed. Art movements have countless names. Your purification process may harbinger another one, 'distillism.' Good to the very last drop.
