Cicada Emergence 4
This is one of a sequence of eight photos I took when I discovered a mass emergence of cicadas at my sister's house in Asheville, NC. They were everywhere, in every stage of transformation. The brown grubs burrowed out of the ground and latched onto any support. Shortly thereafter, their backs split open and the adult insect slowly emerged. It took this one about an hour to emerge, and an aditional three hours to darken and mature. It was a wonderful process to observe and be able to photograph.
