Pansies are simple flowers but their colors and markings are very striking. I love them grown in large mounds, a sight I recall from childhood. They remind me more of butterflies than faces and appear to flitter with a bit of wind. The name "pansy" evolved from the original French word "pensée" (meaning "thought") because the flower resembled a "pensive human face." These were photographed the beginning of May in the courtyard garden at Matthaei Botanical Gardens.
