German sailors with a wallaby on board the German cruiser KOLN

This image depicts German sailors with a wallaby on board the Konigsberg class light cruiser KOLN. The wallaby was presented as an 'Australian mascot' to the crew of the cruiser when the training ship visited Fremantle, Western Australia in March 1933. The photograph was taken while the vessel was berthed at Sydney Cove Passenger Terminal, West Circular Quay during the German Navy's visit in May 1933.

This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century.
