"Magic Happens" - Fire Dancers in Goa

    Newer Older

"Magic Happens" - Fire Dancers Maren and Ramsey, performing at Club Cabana, Arpora, Goa, India.

    The performers:
Maren - the lady on the platform, surrounded by the confusion of flames - and Ramsey - the bare-chested man who has just executed the geometrically perfect circles of fire - were the star attractions at Club Cabana for several evenings running, during the Christmas - New Year week of 2003.

They had both come from Germany, had fallen in love with Goa, and had stayed on, earning their way with their fire performances throughout North Goa during the peak tourist season.

This shoot was at their invitation, and they were very pleased with the several images of their performance that I gifted them prints of.

The following year, their partnership, "Magic Happens", had wound up and Ramsay had gone off elsewhere, but Maren had stayed on in Goa, teaching Yoga. The last I heard, she was trying to figure out how to get a bank account opened in Goa.

    The venue:
Club Cabana is one of the most happening clubs in North Goa. Located on a hillside in Arpora, surrounded by many acres of privately owned forested hills, this club definitely offers the most awesome view of many kilometers of countryside spread out before it.

The club boasts a swimming pool on an outcropping in the slope, so you can admire the glimmering lights of Arpora village nearby, and further out, the well-known Baga Beach area with its brightly lit hotels and resorts, while nursing your drink and wading in the pool.

Club Cabana offers all-you-can-drink at the price of the entrance fee, making it a much favored destination for the serious drinkers as well as the wannabe boozards. The sight of a drunken reveller, male or female, keeling over dead drunk, is not rare at all.
