Gabon ivory

Nearly five tons of elephant ivory and thousands of ivory ornaments were burned in Gabon, Central West Africa. The bonfire, lit by President Ali Bongo Ondimba, put government stockpiles of legal and confiscated tusks and ivory items out of reach of the illegal ivory trade. IFAW applauded Gabon's efforts to prevent elephant poaching and said the stockpile burning was powerful and showed the desire to protect elephants from being killed for their ivory in the range states.
