Guero's, March 10 2002

About seven and a half years ago, a bunch of us went to dinner in Austin, TX. Since then, a lot of us made websites or companies or children or all of the above. I'll need your help to label them all, and to mention any projects I forgot.

(Later, I convinced the waitress to present a Sharpie & an 8x10 glossy photo of John Tesh to Jeff Veen when he arrived, so that he could autograph it for the restaurant's wall. I had never met Jeff before that moment, but he took it pretty well.)

And the guy who coined the word "blog" is in there, too. Later on we were joined by the guy who coined the term "Ajax". In the years since, some of these folks have also gone on to join companies like Facebook, Google and Yahoo.

I blame all of these people equally.

I see Nick Denton and Molly Steenson in there. And some other people who I should recognize and will be embarrassed when they get tagged.

    guilty, all of you!

    (...and, thanks)

Sweet, there are two symmetrical Jay Allens. Just like real life.

Thanks. When the user-generated panopticon gives rise to SkyNet, I'll know where to set my DeLorean's time circuits to avert the crisis.

    Peter still has those pants.

My GAWD what a bunch of nerd-do-wells... The best part of that night Brad has captured in the picture.

"Mr. Tesh, I happened to have your picture with me, can I get your autograph?"'

I mean, think about that for a second. That's some serious work put in to make that joke run flawlessly. It's not like you can get a headshot of John Tesh just anywhere. Yep, they don't make jokes like the used to.

Or hair products, judging by Ice Ice Becker....

Man, Jay Allen really gets around!
  • Jay Allen 6y

    Shhhh! Don't tell my wife...

I wonder how many books have been authored by that room of people?
  • Jennifer Robbins 6y

I remember this dinner vividly. Some of the people I met that night went on to become my best friends.

Before my time at SXSW, checked my photos and found Coudal and Fried having breakfast tacos in 08

I don't think I was at this dinner, unless that's me waaaay in the back wearing the apron and the serving cap. I have a bunch of pictures from that years' SXSW.
  • Maggie Mason 6y

What I remember most is the wait to get that damn table.
  • Stewart Butterfield 6y

Wow - that seems so, so long ago.
  • Jason Levine 6y

I love the internet -- Brad seems to have more images of this meal here, here, here.
  • Bryan Mason 6y

This was 80% of the SxSWi attendees that year. And 50% of the presenters.
  • Nima Badiey 6y

You need to overlay the heads with the companies they founded too!

I hope you'll consider adding this & other photos of Brad to the group Celebrating TheBrad.
