London Protests Against the Tories and Austerity
This photo set features some photos from recent protests against the new Tory government, its stupidity, its cruelty, and its lack of a mandate. Although the Tories managed to secure 50.8% of the seats in parliament, they had the support of just 24.4% of the electorate and just 36.9% of those who voted, thanks to the unfairness of the "first past the post" voting system. With the Tories back in power, it is obvious that any of us who care about society, community, the welfare state, the NHS, social housing, the working class, the poor, the unemployed, the disabled, Muslims and immigrants have a huge fight on our hands for the next five years.
These protests took place on May 27 and May 30 in central London, and I'm glad to note that the People's Assembly is also organising a huge national demo to take place on Saturday June 20. We will be setting off from the Bank of England at noon and marching to Parliament Square, and I hope you will join us.
