Andy Worthington and Omar Deghayes at a Guantanamo event in Westminster University, March 19, 2013
This is me on March 19, 2013 with former Guantanamo prisoner Omar Deghayes, and Hanan Ak and Undleeb Iqbal of Westminster University's Amnesty International group, at the university's Regent Street campus. The evening featured a packed house of educated, well-informed, passionate enthusiasts for justice, who had turned up to hear Omar and I in discussion about Guantanamo, the ongoing hunger strike and the case of Shaker Aamer, the last British resident in the prison, and the e-petition to the British government, demanding action to secure his return to the UK.
Shaker Aamer, who was cleared for release in 2007 under President Bush, and again under President Obama in 2009, is, disgracefully, still held. The e-petition needs 100,000 signatures by April 20 to be eligible for a parliamentary debate.
See the e-petition here: epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/33133
The e-petition is for UK citizens and residents only, but there is an international petition here: www.thepetitionsite.com/1/shaker-aamerguantanamo-bay/
