Proud to be born in Lewisham Hospital

On January 26, 2013, in Lewisham, in south east London, this boy, with his colourful and powerful message, was one of an estimated 25,000 people marching to save Lewisham Hospital from having its A&E Department closed, and other services severely downgraded, in plans put forward by a government-appointed NHS Special Administrator, Matthew Kershaw, as part of his solution to the financial problems of a neighbouring NHS Trust, the South London Healthcare Trust, burdened with payments for PFI deals which are so exorbitant that they should be illegal. The proposals were put forward even though Lewisham NHS Trust is not in debt, which sends a clear message that the NHS and the government are punishing success and rewarding failure, and are doing so to protect the corporate sharks profiting from their PFI deals. If health secretary Jeremy Hunt approves the proposals, there will be just one A&E Department, at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich, for the 750,000 people in three boroughs -- Greenwich, Lewisham and Bexley.
