Leili Kashani calls for the closure of Guantánamo

On January 11, 2013, the 11th anniversary of the opening of Guantánamo, Leili Kashani of the Center for Constitutional Rights was one of the speakers outside the White House, in in President's Park South (aka the Ellipse), where protestors gathered after a rally at the Supreme Court and a march through the streets of Washington D.C. Leili spoke about Adnan Latif, a Yemeni who died at Guantánamo last September, despite having been cleared for release under both President Bush and President Obama, and also spoke about a friend of his, Mohammed al-Hamiri, who, like Adnan, was cleared for release from Guantánamo by a military review board under the Bush administration (in 2007), and was also recommended for release by President Obama's interagency Guantánamo Review Task Force in 2009. Also identified as Mohammed Abdullah Mohammed Ba Odah, he is one of 86 prisoners (out of 166 men who are still held) who have been cleared for release but are still held, a statistic that ought to be a source of undying shame for all decent people -- and for the President who has failed to secure their release. Pardiss Kebriaei, a Senior Staff Attorney at CCR, was holding up a placard publicising Mohammed's case.
