At The Cutting Edge ...

This is simply me ... shaving ... with my usual razor ... an old fashioned cut throat.

This is inspired in part by my flatmate's studies into gender identity and concepts of masculinity. This made me think of the ritual of shaving. Whilst I envy the convenience for those men who have not needed to shave even into their late twenties I know they have envied the icon of masculinity that they have perceived my beard to be.

Lighting info: I lit this by firing my flash away from me and into the corner of a white walled room, to the left and just behind the camera.

Very nice portrait, I like how you got your back AND front in the same shot, without having the camera in sight.

Regarding shaving, I hate it, if it was only up to me, I think i'll never shave ;)
But, you are very daring to still shave with that! I'll surely open my throat at the first try.

    Thanks Mortimer?

I got both my back and front in the image by standing so far to one side of the mirror I could hardly see my own reflection, but I could see the camera.

Nearly no one ever believe me, but my open razor is actually much safer than any of the safety razors I have ever used. Whilst it has so much more potential for danger if I was ever daft enough to slice instead of shave the razor is much less likely to skip on stubble or a spot. So I have had far fewer nicks since I started using it.

MY GOD you're a brave man Andrew ;) nice portrait too....
  • Andrew Dyer 8y

Haha! :D Thank you.... Whilst cut throat razors may look sinister and certainly have a very scary name they really are not as dangerous as they might appear.
  • playa_pixie 8y

    hmmmmmm...........................................................................i dont believe you ;D
  • Andrew Dyer 8y

    Well you should! :)
  • maneeacc 8y

haha.... yea... i agree with playa pixie... :P

so... this is how you get your stunning shave and that zorro like look... :D

    awesome...
  • Andrew Dyer 8y

Yep Maneeacc, this is indeed how I get my shave. I don't think I could get the Zorro/V For Vendetta look if I used any other type of razor. I certainly could not get it so close and precise! :)

those razors scare the heck out of me
  • Andrew Dyer 8y

Jim - Those razors scare a lot of people. Unless they are being weilded by some character from a Scorsese movie, but are just being used to shave with they needn't be at all scary. They give better, closer and more comfortable shaves than anything else I have tried.

    It's a very interesting capture!

I'm not sure what draws me, the green, the angle or the light? Whatever it is, it works!

Thanks for sharing about the light, though I'm not sure how you did this. On a timer?
  • Andrew Dyer 8y

Églantine - I'm pleased you find this image so interesting.

I simply set the timer for 15 seconds to give me time to get the pose right, keeping one eye on the flashing focus assist light that was counting down the seconds and there you go.
  • Jim G Photography 8y

the blade is so exposed and you have to watch every move so you don't slice something you shouldnt. i'll pass for now
  • Andrew Dyer 8y

Jim - Hey, I am not trying to persuade anyone else to shave with a razor like mine, I am just showing what works for me. :)

I do of course realise that whilst the cut throat is the only razor that really works for me, for someone else it might just as well be an electric shaver. Of course the image is meant to be more about the ritual of shaving being an icon of masculinity rather than the technique of shaving.

matt showed me this after he saw mine...

    shave.

it's a great photo. sorry to hit a nerve with you.
  • Andrew Dyer 6y

None Of The Above - Wow, that's a cool picture, I really like the high contrast of it. The curl of hair outlining your eye socket is pretty cool too.

Jim Greenfield - Don't worry, no nerves hit. I'm just happy people like the photo. :)
