Kmart Penske Auto Service

Would you have your car fixed at Kmart? I don't know if I would...but at one time, many people did. Auto service centers were routinely integrated into Kmart store designs from the 1960s to the 1990s. No more.

In 1995, Floyd Hall became CEO of Kmart. One of his first orders of business was to sell the auto centers to Roger Penske, who operated them under leases and rebranded them under his own name. Like most of Hall's actions in the latter half of the 1990s, this resulted in a dead cat bounce...and after Kmart's inevitable bankruptcy in early 2002, all the Penske centers shut their doors.

Since Penske is now a brief and distant memory, I was pleasantly surprised to still see this sign on the wall ten years on. Then again, K-Sears management probably don't have enough money to paint it over...:P
