Hot Lips, Psychotria poeppigiana, Rubiaceae
The "red lips" are actually bracts which surround the inconspicuous, yellow flowers (www.flickr.com/photos/andreaskay/8079784926) and attract pollinators, mainly hummingbirds. Later, in the fruit stage, the brilliant red bracts contrast well with the blue berries and attract birds as seed dispersers. Interestingly, most bird flowers are red, because these are less conspicuous to insects, which cannot distinguish well between red flowers and green vegetation, contrary to birds, which like us, have seperate colour receptors for red and green. This reduces nectar robbing by insects, that do not efficiently pollinate these flowers, while attracting birds which feed on the nectar and in return carry pollen to other flowers.
